6. Fa├žade Grants

This building had not been updated for decades. The new owner of the building applied for a facade grant through the MSAB. We sent a design request into the Main Street Program's design service and they created this look for the building's owner.

Renovations begun with new paint, new awnings and new lighting on the exterior. At the same time a new tenant was moving in, and everything was coordinated together for signs, the new color scheme and marketing materials.

The Main Street Advisory Board was excited to approve this facade grant, and in doing so, this section of W Market Street is now a colorful, bustling area of downtown.

This is a before photo of the building before the facade renovation began.

8. Other Mural Grants

Downtown Elkin offers opportunities in various ways to showcase big bold images. Artist Michael Brown came to Elkin and was thrilled with the possibilities. Below shows the process of before and after, for our first mural that came to downtown in 2013.  We hope to provide many more stunning images throughout the downtown for generations to enjoy, with a total of five murals to be completed by Spring 2016.

Before (left) and during the mural painting process (right). This image has enhanced the south entrance into Elkin's downtown from the Jonesville exit (Hwy 67) onto South Bridge Street. It honors structures of the past, no longer standing in Elkin.

These are other mural projects we sponsored through grants in 2013.

Photo of our latest mural in downtown, completed in 2015, with mural artist Michael Brown in the lower portion of the photo.  Thanks goes out to Dennis Myers, owner of the building, who applied for a mural grant through the MSAB and asked for a trails-themed mural to be placed on his building.

9.  Banner project

The banner project started a few years ago when the Board decided to bring a new vibe to downtown.

They decided on a color scheme and images to showcase various experiences that occur in downtown Elkin throughout the year.

Winter/Spring banners offer a vibrant apple green with images of dining, wine tasting, fiddle conventions, and cycling (a new initiative in Elkin).

Summer/Fall showcases a deep purple with images for Shop Local (with a photo from the Farmers Market), cruise Elkin, a musician playing guitar (symbolizing our live music venues throughout downtown), and a trail cairn-since the NC Mountains to Sea Trail and the Overmountain Victory Trail come through downtown Elkin, as well as honoring the Elkin Valley Trails Association for building fabulous trails from downtown toward Stone Mountain State Park.

10.  Benches / poles / receptacles

The Main Street Advisory Board is also responsible for creating a consistent look to the downtown with upgraded benches throughout Main Street with matching waste receptacles. The feel of a historical downtown is important to us, because it enhances the overall experience when you spend the day with us in downtown.

Look for more exciting improvements to come in the next year...we'll keep you updated here as projects are completed.

11.  Elkin Farmers Market

The Main Street Advisory Board has contributed to the Farmers Market success in many ways by funding the accessories at the market (picnic tables, waste can, bulletin board, Elkin Farmers Market sign, t-shirts, FM bags, and landscaping along Bridge Street.

Most recently, they funded the murals of four Yadkin Valley Seed Company seed packets that now grace the tower at the market. You will also see duplicates of these murals throughout downtown.

They are also looking at ways to fund ceiling fans and an awning along one side of the shelter which receives less shade from the hot summer sun. If you are interest in contributing funds, please let us know!
